Good Featurette on Midnight Cowboy

Controversy and Acclaim (2006)

*** (out of 4)

This 9-minute featurette can be found on the MGM Special Edition of MIDNIGHT COWBOY. There's really no reason this couldn't have been featured in the main documentary (AFTER MIDNIGHT) on the disc but for whatever reason they made it its own featurette. For the most part this is a pretty good look at the controversy surrounding the sexuality in the film as well as the acclaim it won including the Best Picture Oscar. Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Adam Holdender, Jennifer Salt and Bob Balabon are among those interviewed. Each one discusses the frank sexuality in the film as well as why they were certain never to cut the film to avoid its X-rating and this includes after it started to win all the awards. It seems everyone thought they were doing a great film but it also seems that they thought the mainstream would have a problem with it. With such a small running time there's not too much detail here but fans of the film should enjoy it.
