The story concerns the love of two firemen, Duffy and Mack, for Nora Donovan. Duffy is the accepted suitor. Mack, a moral weakling, nurses a bitter hatred for his successful rival and takes the opportunity to comprise him in the eyes of the girl. Mack's scheme works so well that Nora throws Duffy over and accepts for the time being, Mack's attentions. Later, Mack marries Nora and shortly after that he is discharged for drunkenness. Hopeless and without funds, Nora goes to work in a factory. Of an afternoon Duffy and Mack meet and Duffy learns that Nora is at work. He upbraids Mack for allowing it and Mack, sufficiently drunk to be affected, resolves to make Nora quit. He enters the factory and has trouble with the superintendent.
